“We are not the silver bullet—we can be the silver lining.” Important words spoken by Camille Rivera in a discussion about the mainland Puerto Rican vote in upcoming elections. She was a participant at a recent panel “Vota Boricua,” held at Netroots Nation 2018 in New Orleans. The devastating effects of Hurricane Maria had a diaspora effect on residents of Puerto Rico. The impact of this forced migration will reverberate in the state and national political landscape. Estimates indicate Florida has welcomed at least 300,000 Puerto Ricans so far. If just one third of that group had the ability to vote […]

Ramon Espinosa/AP The very last of Puerto Rico’s 3.3 million residents got power back last Friday after last fall’s hurricanes. Power was finally restored more than 11.5 months after it first went out and more than a week after the island’s power authority announced electricity had been fully restored.  Rebuilding after the first series of hurricanes was Puerto Rico’s first hurdle, its second, and arguably more difficult, hurdle will be rebuilding its island-wide power grid. José Saldaña is one of the very last of Puerto Rico’s 3.3 million residents to get power back after last fall’s hurricanes. It was finally restored […]

by I'm Struggling
Shutterstock On a call with investors this week, GW Pharmaceuticals revealed the price of Epidiolex, its newly-approved, marijuana-based drug for rare forms of epilepsy. Designed to treat two rare forms of childhood epilepsy using a marijuana compound called CBD, the drug is the first medication of its kind to get FDA approval. The person leading the company’s commercialization efforts in the US said the goal is to keep the price of the drug on par with other epilepsy medications. A marijuana-derived drug that recently became the first of its kind to win federal approval is not going to be cheap. […]

France has banned all children under 15 from using their phones in school

by I'm Struggling
Tomohiro Ohsumi/Getty Images French students returning from the summer break will no longer be able to use their phones during the school day. Earlier this summer France banned all students under 15 from using all cellphones, tablets, and smartwatches at any point during the day. That includes mealtimes. The government is concerned that students are becoming too dependent on and distracted by their phones. Monday is the first day that French schoolchildren under 15 cannot use their cellphones at any point during the school day, thanks to a new nationwide law. The ban, passed in July following a campaign pledge made […]

West, Texas It was April 2013, and all across the small Texas town of West, the treetops were on fire. An ammonium nitrate explosion at the West Fertilizer Company’s storage facility had carved a 75-foot crater from the earth, flipping cars and coiling nearby train tracks. Some two dozen first responders had been on the scene before the burning plant unexpectedly blew; 12 of them were now dead. It was a catastrophe, an unimaginable horror for a town of 2,800 and the moment the regulatory wheels of the federal government began spinning. Regulation is a dirty word—understandably so if you […]
