A European city crisscrossed by waterways is facing too much water altogether. Officials estimate that up to 75 percent of Venice, Italy, is flooded amid intense winds, the BBC reported. The water reached its highest level since December 2008, according to the Associated Press. Across Italy, at least nine people have died due to the storms, Reuters reported. People hit by trees in Rome, Terracina and Naples were among the dead, according to CNN. A woman was killed by debris in Liguria, and a firefighter was killed while volunteering in San Martino. “The exceptional wave of bad weather leaves us with a dramatic toll: nine […]

Luke Bryan’s mother is among the thousands of Floridians left devastated by Hurricane Michael — the Category 4 storm that hit the Florida panhandle on Oct. 10. Nine days after the storm wreaked havoc along the coast, the 42-year-old country crooner’s mother LeClaire returned with friends to salvage what she could from her home in the hard-hit Mexico Beach area. Little of the building withstood the winds of the hurricane and as LeClaire, taking photos, overlooked her debris-covered yard and other obliterated homes the mother of the “Most People Are Good” singer became too overwhelmed, breaking down in tears. Leaning against the […]

Where Hurricane Florence May Show Up in the September Jobs Report

by I'm Struggling
in News
Hurricane Florence appears unlikely to knock the labor market off course. While the storm caused flooding in the Carolinas last month, the hurricane’s effects may not be obvious in the most closely watched figures in the September jobs report—the unemployment rate and payroll change—to be released Friday by the Labor Department. That’s due to a combination of the storm’s timing and its effects being felt by a relatively small slice of the U.S. economy. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal expect the unemployment rate to tick down to 3.8% in September and project U.S. employers added 180,000 jobs to […]
